Maintaining a Gas-Fired, High Efficiency Boiler: 3 Things You Should Know

Gas-fired, high-efficiency boilers are becoming increasingly popular in U.S. homes. And for good reason! Traditional boilers tend to waste a significant amount of energy because the combustion hot gases are vented directly out of the boiler’s flue. On the other hand, gas-fired, high-efficiency boilers are designed to capture more of this heat and transfer it throughout the home’s heating system, reducing energy consumption and lowering heating bills. Gas-fired, high-efficiency boilers utilize condensing technology, which incorporates a secondary heat exchanger to recapture the combustion gases and extract additional heat. When it comes to ensuring the performance, energy efficiency and longevity of this popular heating appliance, maintenance is critical. Here are three things that you should know about maintaining a gas-fired, high-efficiency boiler.

Prioritize annual boiler servicing by calling a qualified service technician

During routine maintenance, a technician will be able to catch one often overlooked item: acidic condensate. This residue is the byproduct of the condensing technology used in gas-fired, high-efficiency boilers. If left untreated, acidic condensate can damage plumbing, concrete foundations, floor drains, septic systems and other wastewater infrastructure. But not to worry. Consider water treatment measures such as installing a water softener or using water treatment chemicals to prevent scale formation.

It’s also a good idea to periodically flush the boiler system to remove accumulated sediments and debris. Regular flushing helps maintain optimal water quality and prevents the buildup of impurities that can negatively impact the boiler's performance.
